 At its May 24 meeting, the Piedmont Unified Board of Education:

Recognized Outgoing Student Board Members - The Board recognized the contributions of Piedmont High School senior, Gianna Yan, and juniors, Cleopatra Tahawi and Siddharth Bhatia, during the 2022-23 school year. 

Recognized Retiring Staff Members - The Board celebrated the careers of six retiring PUSD staff members:

  • Carol Cramer - Principal, Wildwood Elementary

  • Annie Holland - History Instructor, Piedmont Middle School

  • Laura Holley - SPED Instructor, Millennium High School

  • Sarah Kingston - Math Intervention Specialist, Wildwood Elementary

  • Tammy Medress - 5th-Grade Teacher, Beach Elementary

  • Nancy Roscelli - 2nd-Grade Teacher, Havens Elementary

Approved and Adopted Resolution 21-2022-23 Declaring June LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

Ratified Appointment of Irma Muñoz as Millennium High School Principal - The Board unanimously approved the appointment of Irma Muñoz as new Principal of MHS, effective July 1, 2023. She replaces Shannon Fierro, who will return to the classroom as a Spanish Instructor and continue to oversee the District’s Adult School program. Ms. Muñoz is very familiar to the PUSD community having served as Assistant Principal at Piedmont High School for the past eight years. Besides her many administrative roles, she has been instrumental in providing mental health support for students while overseeing the PUSD Wellness Center, and has led many of the District’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives including the establishment of the District’s BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) Network, support of Ethnic Studies and Affinity Mentorship courses, and participation on the DEIB Council. First Reading: Adoption of Foundational Literacy Instructional Materials - In 2015, the California Department of Education adopted English Language Arts instructional materials, following the adoption of the Common Core English Language Arts Standards in 2010 and the English Language Arts/English Language Development Framework in 2014. Districts are given local control in deciding the timeline for adopting materials, based on local priorities. The elementary adoption process for English Language Arts was completed in 2019 and high numbers of local reading data show approximately 90% of eighth-grade readers are proficient or advanced; however, research and local, state, and national discussions about the science of reading and the effectiveness of our currently adopted phonics curriculum have been taking place over the past 3 years which led the district to work with primary teachers to review other phonics curriculum options. First Reading: Reading of New Board Policy 6163.1 - Library Media Centers - Tabled until future meeting. 

Approved and Adopted Resolution 22-2022-23 - Obsolete Textbooks.

Reviewed and Approved Third Interim 2022-23 Budget Report - At the time of the Board review of the 2022-23 2nd Interim Financial Report on March 8, 2023, the Board certified the District's financial position as "Qualified". This was the result of various factors that have caused the District to draw on its 3% reserve to meet all financial obligations for 2022-23. Factors contributing to the change in the District's financial position include (1) the Governor's January proposal to clawback the AMIM grant ($450K); (2) slowness in receiving funding from the State for other 2022-23 commitments (transportation and facilities); and unanticipated increases in costs for utilities and special education. As a result of the "Qualified" certification, the District is required to submit a 3rd Interim Report. The 3rd Interim Report focuses on the General Fund only. It provides a snapshot of the District's financial position as of April 30, 2023, plus other information from the Governor's May Revision that will impact the current year's financials. Received Information on May Revise to Governors 2023-24 Budget - On May 12, 2023, the Governor released the May Revision to his proposed budget (the May Revise). The District will be required to use the proposals of the May Revision in budget development because the District must approve a budget before the Legislature and Governor conclude negotiations and adopt the State budget.
